Al Norte https://migratory.network/listing/al-norte/ Tue, 01 Feb 2022 00:16:12 +0000 https://migratory.network/?post_type=hp_listing&p=603 The stars are allies for migrants in the USMX borderlands. Celestial navigation is ancient knowledge that encourages us to find connections between ourselves, the Earth, and the sky. We come into a vision that expands how we relate to and coexist with the environment. “al norte” is meant to function as a guide for navigating the earth with the assistance of the stars. When one looks up they seek out a vision beyond the self, and “al norte” is a tool to locate and navigate the self towards a future of their own design.
The star map has the North Star (Polaris) at the center with the different positions of the Osa Mayor and Osa Menor during the different seasons of the year. The map shows how to locate the North Star using the constellations, and there is additional writing to explain what the image displays.

Action
Juarez, Mexico

On the border before the COVID19 contingency, a large part of the population crossed every day to study, work, visit a relative or make purchases, this activity is well known by the border community -Juarez/El Paso-, including by the “migras” who are checking the documents of those crossing from Mexico to the United States. Now with the restrictions due to the contingency, only U.S. citizens cross.

Illegal transnational labor, crossing to work with a b1/b2 tourist visa for Mexican citizens was very common. During the crossing the migra is obligated to ask you a series of standardized questions in order to give you a pass to the twin city. You should never say that you work or intend to work in the United States, as this would be punishable by a sanction such as having your visa revoked and no longer being able to cross.

In this action I make visible the standardized questions and answers on t-shirts so that – when the border opens – any Mexican citizen with a b1/b2 visa can successfully cross to work.

Bright Lights is an online audiovisual archive of LGBT+ people who live in the north of Mexico. Initially, the project will engage people that live in Juárez and El Paso, to make visible the ways in which living on the border impacts the everyday life of LGBT+ people in contrast to other geographical regions of the country. While filming in Ciudad Juarez we met Alexa Nicol, Carolina y Yanci who are transgender women from Central America migrating to the United States. We invited them to collaborate with us for the Migratory Yellow Pages telling their story.
