Carrier Waves

Carrier Waves

Carrier Waves is adapted from an audio essay written for short-range AM broadcast as part of the two-channel work “Carriers.” From the vantage point of an unremarkable freight line running through Montreal, this essay explores the connections between human-made infrastructure, borders, and communications systems, understood as processes which are inextricably tangled with the natural world. The invisible forces of electromagnetism are interwoven into individual bodies and collective systems, manifesting as radio waves, electricity, embodied magnetic fields, and more. The electromagnetic spectrum can be seen as an invisible commons, offering physical and conceptual space for acts of individual and collective agency within otherwise privatized and totalizing systems.

The Border is Nowhere is a personal account of crossing the US-Quebec border on foot at the end of summer 2018.
